Big Problem: A Festive and Merry Typeface for Holiday Designs

As I opened a fresh brand board for a local café’s visual refresh, I knew I needed something special to capture the cozy, festive atmosphere. Enter Big Problem, a typeface that promises to bring a touch of enchantment to any design. With its whimsical flair and decorative elements, it seemed perfect for this project.

Visual Characteristics and Personality

Big Problem is a script font with a distinct holiday vibe. The letters are playful and ornate, with a hand-drawn feel that adds a personal touch. The decorative elements, like swashes and flourishes, give it a festive and merry appearance, making it ideal for seasonal designs. The overall mood is cheerful and inviting, perfect for creating a warm, welcoming brand identity.

Performance in Branding Work

I started by testing Big Problem on a logo concept for the café. The font’s decorative elements made the logo stand out, adding a unique, handcrafted feel. It worked beautifully as a display font, making the café’s name memorable and visually appealing. However, I noticed that at smaller sizes, the intricate details could become a bit hard to read, so I decided to use it primarily for the main logo and larger headings.

Next, I moved on to the packaging mockup. Big Problem added a touch of magic to the product labels, making them look like they were part of a special, limited-edition holiday collection. The font’s whimsical style perfectly complemented the café’s branding, creating a cohesive and enchanting look.

For the business card, I used Big Problem for the café’s name and a simple sans serif font for the contact information. This combination maintained the festive feel while ensuring readability. The result was a business card that felt both professional and festive, perfect for a café that wants to make a memorable impression.

Readability and Visual Hierarchy

While Big Problem shines in headlines and logos, it’s not the best choice for long body text or small sizes. The decorative elements, while charming, can be too busy for extended reading. For the café’s website, I used Big Problem for the homepage hero section and key headings, but opted for a clean, readable sans serif for the body text. This balance created a clear visual hierarchy, making the site both engaging and easy to navigate.

In social media graphics, Big Problem was a standout. The font’s whimsical style made Instagram posts and Facebook banners feel lively and festive. I used it for short, impactful phrases and paired it with a simple sans serif for additional text, ensuring the posts remained visually appealing without overwhelming the audience.

Font Pairing and Practical Advice

When it comes to font pairing, Big Problem works well with a variety of typefaces. For a classic and elegant look, I paired it with a serif font. For a more modern and clean aesthetic, a sans serif font was a great choice. In the café’s case, I used a sans serif for most of the supporting text, which provided a nice contrast and enhanced readability.

Before using Big Problem in final client work, it’s essential to test it in various contexts. Check how it looks on different backgrounds, in different sizes, and in different applications. This will help you ensure that the font performs well across all design assets and maintains the desired visual impact.

Lastly, always review the commercial font licensing before using Big Problem in client projects, especially if you plan to use it in packaging, merchandise, or digital products. This ensures that you have the necessary permissions and can avoid any legal issues.

Conclusion

Big Problem is a delightful and festive typeface that brings a touch of enchantment to any design. Its whimsical and decorative style makes it perfect for holiday-themed projects, logos, and social media graphics. While it may not be the best choice for long body text or formal corporate use, it shines as a display and accent font. With careful testing and thoughtful font pairing, Big Problem can add a magical and inviting touch to your brand identity and design projects.
